Top Ten Richest Counties in Kenya (2022)

According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) of 2022, Which ranked riches counties based on different multidimensional such as physical development (stunting), nutrition, health, education, child protection, information, water, sanitation, and housing. Besides looking at the monetary poverty.

According to a new Kenya National Bureau of Statistics report released in May of 2022, Nairobi is by far Kenya’s richest county, accounting for 27.5 per cent of total GDP, the capital city is more than three-and-a-half times larger in economic terms than Nakuru, Kiambu, Mombasa, and Machakos. Nairobi’s contribution to the national wealth dispels the notion that the seat of power accounts for more than 60 per cent of national output as previously widely held.

Nakuru county is in second place with a GDP share of 6.1 per cent.
Farming is the main economic activity in Nakuru County. Nevertheless, the ecological system of the county is robust and Nakuru residents rely on it for other economic activities such as tourism, energy, and many other commercial activities that are beneficial.
Nakuru County is the fastest-growing city in East and Central Africa, growing proportionately at the same rate in the building and construction industry.
This rapid growth rate in the construction industry has increased currency velocity in the county, leading to
the creation of several construction-related industries over and above, giving employment opportunities for thousands of people.

Kiambu County

Kiambu county accounts for 5.9% of Kenya’s GDP. HostingThika town which is a big industrial and a major commerce hub. With close proximity to Nairobi, Kiambu county boosts good schools and road infrastructure.

In Kiambu County, the main economic activity is tea, coffee, dairy, poultry and horticultural agriculture. Which contributes immensely to 17.4 per cent of the population income of the county.

Mombasa County 

The main economic activity is tourism which contributes to 68% of the wage employment.

The county is the hub of the country’s tourism. Fort Jesus, white sandy beaches, water sports, Mombasa Marine National Park, Nature Trail, historical and cultural sites, and numerous world-class tourist hotels are host to various tourist attractions.
With a GDP of  5.2 per cent, Mombasa county is fourth on the list of the richest counties in Kenya.

Machakos County 

With a GDP of 3.4%, Machakos county completes a list of our top five.
The main economic activities of the county include livestock farming, fruit farming, sand harvesting, mining, and trade. Food crops grown include cereals. The County is well-endowed with natural resources such as waters from rivers Athi and Tana, livestock, minerals, game, tourists attraction sites, rangeland, and pastures.

The rest…

The rest of the top ten counties are 6th.  Meru (2.9%), 7th.  Kisumu (2.9%), 8th. Nyandarua (2.6%), 9th. Kakamega (2.4%) and 10th. Uasin-Gishu (2.3%).

Nyandarua and Elgeyo Marakwet include other counties that were highly rated by the ground-breaking study due to
their impactful economic activities but do not host any of the top 20 constituencies preferred by the wealthy.


The KNBS report found that, after Nyandarua and Elgeyo Marakwet, which had the first and second highest GCP per capita (per person), Nairobi residents were also the third most productive.

    Now this is the real thing. The other which rated Kajiado County as the richest, some years back, was a scam and meant to deny the county it’s rightful share of the National revenue.
